What is your favorite book?
I think there are some favorites that stop you in your tracks when you read them at certain points in your life. For me, those would be Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Night by Elie Wiesel, The Autobiography of Malcolm X and In Cold Blood.

What do you like about writing?
I like the stages before writing: having an idea and then researching it. I also like the stages after writing, when you look at a pile of work and feel satisfied. For the actual writing ... hmm. I like editing.

Where do you work?
At my little desk built under the stairs.

What's something people don't know about you?
I really like shopping for food. Whenever I travel anywhere, I like to see where people shop for food. I also love going to movie theaters in other countries to see their movie snacks.

What advice do you have for other writers?
Be kind to yourself.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
I think all of it, actually. Of all the parents and sisters in the world, I'm really glad I got mine.
