Dušan Petričić

Duýan Petričić is an award-winning children's book designer and illustrator whose books include Bagels from Benny, The Enormous Potato and In the Tree House. He lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Toronto, Ontario.

When did you start drawing?
When I was four.

What is your favorite book?
The Boys from Pavel's Street by Ferenz Molnar.

Do you have any pets?
Yes! A cat.

What is your favorite hobby?
Watching movies.

How did you get involved with children's books?
When my first son was born I started thinking about a new, fresh and different approach to children's books. Soon after that I got the opportunity to illustrate my first picture book.

Do you have any tips for young creators?
Think of what kind of book you missed during your childhood and try to create something like that.

What is the thing you like the most about creating kids' books?
The feeling of playfulness.

How do you research or create your illustrations?
It depends on the project, but thinking about the concept is the most important part of the creation for me.

Where do you get your ideas?

What materials do you work in? What is the difference between different materials?
Pencil, ink and watercolors are my favorite media. Different stories and different concepts require different materials.

What's your greatest childhood memory?
Discovering and widening the world and space around me.

When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up?
A sailor.

What is the weirdest or most interesting job you've ever had?
I am still thinking about and preparing myself for that.
