BOOK NEWS

Scaredy Squirrel Gets Plushy at ALA
MerryMakers, known for their quality toys and dolls based on beloved children’s book characters, presented the new Scaredy Squirrel plush at the American Library Association Annual Conference this past July. The new 12” hand puppet attracted the most attention of any from show attendees, in the form of excited squeals and gentle hugs. The Scaredy Squirel puppet is currently available for purchase from the MerryMakers website.

Before The Delicious Bug there was Dinner for Two
One of Kids Can Press’s new Fall books, The Delicious Bug by Janet Perlman, did not originally start out as a book idea. Its first incarnation was as an animated short called Dinner for Two that gained critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the First Prize for Best Animation Film given by both the Children’s Jury and the Adult Jury at the 1997 International Children’s Film Festival in Chicago.

Like the original animated short, The Delicious Bug presents a humorous look at the importance of peacefully resolving conflict. Click HERE to enjoy a clip of the animated short that inspired the book.

Launch of CitizenKid: Making Global Issues Kid-Sized
Kids Can Press recently hosted two events to celebrate the launch of CitizenKid, a collection of books that inform children about the world and inspire them to be better global citizens.

In May during Book Expo America, David J. Smith, author of the newest book in the CitizenKid collection, If America Were a Village, was on-hand in New York City to speak with booksellers and media about the importance and timeliness of his latest book. In July, Smith dazzled librarians and teachers with a presentation on the importance of global curriculum at a breakfast in Chicago during this year’s American Library Association Annual Conference.

MY FAVE KCP BOOK

My Favorite KCP book is Chester’s Back!

“When I'm looking for the same kind of chuckle Junie B. Jones or Amelia Bedelia give me, Chester's my man. Mélanie always adds the right twist to the end of the story to put him in his place ... uh oh, Mélanie, watch out! Chester's armed (with a red marker) and dangerous!!!! Meow!”
